The Cult of St. Michael in Padula, Campania’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

The presentation of the new entries in the IPIC, the Inventory of the Intangible Heritage of Campania, and the new regional catalog were held today at the Trianon Viviani Theater in Naples.

The 2025 Catalog brings together all the elements present in the Inventory, conceived as a participatory and inclusive tool, designed to protect, safeguard, and enhance the most representative and identifying cultural expressions of our region.

The inventory currently includes 170 elements that are the most authentic expression of a collective and living intangible heritage passed down from generation to generation.

Among these, the cult of St. Michael the Archangel in Padula officially appears today: a candidacy strongly supported by Parish Priest Don Giuseppe Radesca, prepared and presented in January 2025 with the contribution of the Committee for the Patronal Feast and the Grottelle. The Campania Region’s decision therefore recognizes the immense cultural, historical, and identity-building value of the devotional practices associated with St. Michael the Archangel, which for centuries have been a cornerstone of the religious and community life of the entire city of Padula.

The inscription represents a source of pride for our entire community, which sees recognition of the value of its traditions and the cultural heritage it has preserved with deep devotion for centuries.
