We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Simone Piazza from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to our area. He conducted an in-depth study visit to some of our community’s most evocative and historically rich sites: the Church of San Nicola de’ Domnis and the Hermitage of San Michele at Le Grottelle.
The visit included the Hermitage’s striking rock-hewn setting—a site of extraordinary scenic and spiritual appeal. There, Professor Piazza was able to admire the exceptional state of preservation of the fresco cycles—including the *Coronation of the Virgin* and various devotional images—highlighting the significance of these works within the context of Southern Italy’s sanctuaries dedicated to Saint Michael.
The visit continued at the Church of San Nicola de’ Domnis, where the lecturer focused on the precious frescoes dating from the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. Confronted with the fragments of the painted imagery and the historical layers emerging from the walls, the analysis opened up to significant iconographic interpretations.
The insights and reflections shared by Prof. Simone Piazza represent a highly valuable contribution to a well-informed, scholarly understanding of our heritage. His expertise has enriched the narrative surrounding these historic sites, underscoring the importance of combining academic research with the preservation of cultural heritage.
On behalf of the entire community, we extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Prof. Simone Piazza for his visit, his willingness to assist, and the significant scholarly contribution he has made to uncovering the historical roots of Padula.
