The place

16th century
The Chapel of San Sepolcro is located in a very important context from a historical-archaeological point of view, which is that relating to the ancient Cosilinum.

The city, whose name recalls the cult of Conso, an Italian divinity who propitiated good harvests, was occupied by the Lucanians during the 4th century. to. C., becoming a member of the Lucan Federation and then, in 89 a. C., Roman Municipality. The foundation of the chapel is certainly prior to 1600, as revealed by the stucco statue of the Holy Virgin enthroned on a cloud, the overall architectural form and the stone portal that frames the main entrance.

The chapel, in all likelihood, appears to be the expansion of an initial structure, perhaps a cave, evidence of the devotion to the Holy Virgin of the shepherds who already frequented the area in very ancient times. The chapel has a single small nave, with a bell tower incorporated into the structure of the building itself; from the day of the Ascension until the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the church houses the statues of the Crucifix and of the Madonna del Latte which, starting from the parish church of S. Giovanni Battista, are brought by the faithful from the heart of the historic center to the mountain sanctuary, still providing a testimony of faith and popular traditions.

The places, the territory

Padula, famous throughout the world for the monumental Certosa di San Lorenzo, a UNESCO heritage site, is rich in artistic and architectural elements, made up of churches, streets, statues and votive aedicules also made of local stone which bear witness to 1100 years of life. Therefore, it is not possible to overlook the context in which the Carthusian site was built and above all to overlook two fundamental elements: the matter and the spirit of the Certosa.
