Madonna SS. del Carmine

The place

15th century
The Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine, symbol of the faith and religiosity of the Padulesi, is a place for the soul. It is located in Croce and was built in the seventeenth century by Michele Moscarella next to an ancient sacellum, in which the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel was venerated. It has undergone depths that do not allow a glimpse of the structure of the ancient factory.

Rectangular in plan, it has a single nave with a coffered ceiling, a pointed arch triumphal acre, a molded cornice on the entrance wall and an arch on the opposite wall. The Church has a very sober gabled façade, with a modestly made portal with stone architrave and jambs, surmounted by a semicircular tribolated window that illuminates the interior and by a tympanum with a stucco frame.

On the facade a prothyrum with two slopes, on the top of the roof a double arch for the bells, in the back a small apse. The altar built into the wall in masonry, is in sculpted and inlaid polychrome marble, the work of Padulese craftsmen in the center, dominates a niche that contains the plaster statue of the Madonna del Carmine. The interior is simple and solemn, the stuccos and decorations are valuable. The vault is covered with a tempera decoration with plant and floral motifs, in the center a fresco represents Maria SS. of Carmel. The small fan-shaped bell tower is located on the opposite wall of the Church.

Itinerary

The places, the territory

Padula, famous throughout the world for the monumental Certosa di San Lorenzo, a UNESCO heritage site, is rich in artistic and architectural elements, made up of churches, streets, statues and votive aedicules also made of local stone which bear witness to 1100 years of life. Therefore, it is not possible to overlook the context in which the Carthusian site was built and above all to overlook two fundamental elements: the matter and the spirit of the Certosa. Discover the itineraries through the territory of Padula.
