The Sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Monte Romito is located at 1380 m a.s.l.
It is difficult to establish the exact origins of the church. There probably once stood a refuge for some hermit who had retired here and who wanted to dedicate a small sacred building to the Mother of Christ, but it should be prior to the 17th century, as the architectural structure of the portal would seem to indicate.
The original structure has been completely transformed by the various interventions; perhaps there was a pre-existing Romanesque building. The facade has squared stone blocks. The small rectangular hall is very simple and has three niches: on the left and right you can admire the stone statues of Padula of San Michele Arcangelo, patron saint of Padula, and of the Virgin, sculpted in the mid-eighteenth century (the first precisely in 1729 ) by Andrea Carrara (1688-1757), a very skilled master builder of the large community of Padulese stonemasons of the 18th century; in the centre, in the summer months, the Madonna delle Grazie del Romito (16th century) in the wooden caggia.
The devotion of the people of people in Padula to the Blessed Virgin of Romito has been strongly rooted since ancient times. The pilgrimage from the town is repeated twice a year: the ascent on the first Sunday in May and the return on the last Sunday in August when the sacred image is brought back to the church of SS. Announced.
The Sanctuary will be reopened for worship on Sunday 5 May 2024. On the occasion of the pilgrimage that accompanies the ascension of the statue of the Virgin from the city center to Monte Romito, we will celebrate the inauguration and reopening for worship of the Sanctuary which has undergone renovation works which affected the chapel, the bell tower and the surrounding area.

Padula, famous throughout the world for the monumental Certosa di San Lorenzo, a UNESCO heritage site, is rich in artistic and architectural elements, made up of churches, streets, statues and votive aedicules also made of local stone which bear witness to 1100 years of life. Therefore, it is not possible to overlook the context in which the Carthusian site was built and above all to overlook two fundamental elements: the matter and the spirit of the Certosa.
