The Church of Sant’Antonio is located in the historic center of Padula, in the San Paolo area. There is no precise evidence on the date of foundation and origin, but a document from 1223 attests to the existence of a hospital of Sant’Antonio Abate which the Padulesi used for healthcare. The original structure of the sacred building has been transformed several times and the restorations have modified its originality but despite this the Church still has the original rectangular plan with a single nave, with a small apse in the rear part.
\nThe very modest fa\u00e7ade of the past, made with traditional plaster and devoid of any form of decoration, was practically canceled by the intervention carried out by the parish priest Don Igino Pinto in 1967. This intervention transformed the appearance of the church, both internally and externally. The choice of a neo-Gothic style renovation was influenced by the construction, in the 1950s, of the church of Sant’Anna in nearby Montesano. The interior, very simple, has a background fa\u00e7ade decorated with stucco, on which the ‘altar.<\/p>\n

The stuccos of the altar and the two niches are from the 18th century, while those of the side walls and the sky were created during the renovation of 1967. Above the altar there was a beautiful canvas depicting the Saint with the Stick and the little pig dating back to 1700, no longer present today because it was stolen in 1967 (it was replaced with one produced by a local artist).
\nOn the walls are represented the symbols of the four cardinal virtues: prudence, fortitude, justice and temperance. In the center of the ceiling there is a canvas created by Don Igino Pinto, and other stuccos depicting the evangelists. Very interesting inside is a fragment of a 17th century fresco, perhaps depicting a Madonna, and on the right wall a depiction of the Madonna and Child. On the back there is a small bell tower, whose bell, built in 1556 by Fra Georgio Adorno, testifies to the link between the chapel and the Jerusalem order of the Knights of Malta.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
